HC Deb 08 August 1916 vol 85 cc867-8
69. Mr. KING

asked why a sergeant of the Metropolitan Police from Bethnal Green was instructed to make a domiciliary visit in Cephas Street, Mile End; why he took away a letter addressed to that address by the hon. Member for North Somerset; and whether any proceedings or prosecution will be undertaken against any person in this connection?

Mr. SAMUEL

The police paid the visit in question in order to ascertain whether a certain Russian subject living in the house, who had expressed a desire to return to Russia to undertake military service and had been given a permit for the purpose, had actually started or not. The man on being found by the police there produced the letter to which the hon. Member refers, as a reason for not having carried out his original intention. The letter will be returned to him. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.
