HC Deb 08 August 1916 vol 85 c836
2. Mr. HOLT

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that, in accordance with the terms of a notice published by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief in Egypt, all British subjects from the age of eighteen to forty-one years are obliged to supply their names, postal addresses, and other particulars for the information of the Army headquarters; whether Mr. G. F. Lothian, of Port Tewfik, Egypt, has been asked to state if there is any cause why he cannot, or why it is undesirable for him to serve in the Army; and whether he will state by what means compulsory military service for British subjects has been established in Egypt?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Forster)

I was not aware that British subjects had been required to supply their names, nor, if this is so, am I aware for what purpose the names are required. Inquiry is being made.

Mr. KING

Is it being made through the Foreign Office? If so, why cannot the Foreign Office reply?
