HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 cc309-10
83. Mr. ANNAN BRYCE

asked the Minister of Munitions whether the exhausting system of alternate seven-day and seven-night shifts of eleven hours for women workers is still in force at the cordite Cannon Cartridge Factory at Woolwich; and, if so, whether it is proposed to continue it?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MUNITIONS DEPARTMENT (Dr. Addison)

I am afraid I am not able at present to add anything to the reply which I gave to my hon. Friend on 20th July.

Mr. BRYCE

As the answer is very unsatisfactory, I propose to call attention to-the question at an early date.

84. Mr. BRYCE

asked how many per sons are now employed at Woolwich Arsenal for seven days a week; how many volunteer week-end workers are employed on Saturdays and Sundays; and whether it is in contemplation to discontinue seven-day labour and to increase the number of volunteer week-end workers?

Dr. ADDISON

Out of a total number of employés at Woolwich of over 60,000s the number employed regularly for seven days a week is about 3,000; but, in almost every case, they are given one Sunday in about three or four weeks. About 2,400 volunteer week-end workers are employed. It is proposed to discontinue seven-day labour as soon as the exigencies of the service will allow. Practically all women workers have one day's holiday in seven.
