HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 cc315-6
81. Captain C. BATHURST

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that a combination of great shipbuilding firms is about to establish on the banks of the Wye at Chepstow, in Monmouthshire, a new and extensive industry for the construction of standardised steamships and to bring into existence a populous garden city in connection therewith; and whether, seeing that the Severn and the Wye, which flows into it, are the most prolific salmon rivers in the Kingdom and yield between them many hundred tons of salmon netted therein for human food, any provision is being made against the wholesale destruction of these fish in both rivers as the result of their pollution by sewage and other impurities?

Mr. HARCOURT

I am aware that such a scheme is in contemplation. In the event of an application to the Board of Trade for their consent to the execution of any works in the Wye, I will not fail to consult the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries as to any steps that may be desirable for protecting the local fisheries.
