HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 cc297-8
34. Mr. HOGGE

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether he will arrange for the Post Office to accept Scottish bank notes at their face value for, at any rate, the period of the War?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. McKinnon Wood)

Scottish bank notes are accepted at their face value at all post offices in Scotland, but I am afraid that it would not be practicable to extend the arrangement generally to other parts of the United Kingdom.

Mr. HOGGE

Is there any objection to the post offices, particularly in London, where this leally operates most, having Scottish bank notes cashed at face value at Scottish banks in London, thereby giving a great convenience to Scottish soldiers in London?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

I cannot very well argue the question by question and answer, but there are difficulties.

Mr. HOGGE

I will raise this question on the Scottish Estimates.
