HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 c317
65. Mr. BYRNE

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware of the disappointment in the Dublin Metropolitan Police caused by the decision of the Government to allow them 3s. 6d. per week war bonus; if he is aware that their demands were for 12s. increase and 4s. war bonus; if he will reconsider their request or allow them passports to America so as to enable them to earn a living wage?

Mr. SAMUEL

I believe it is the case that some dissatisfaction has been expressed. The original demands were as stated. Passports to America cannot be granted.

Mr. BYRNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that since 1882 the Dublin police have only received a couple of shillings increase in their wages?

Mr. SAMUEL

That is one of the reasons why I recommended to the Treasury a war bonus, which has now been granted.

Mr. BYRNE

Is that war bonus sufficient?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member is now arguing the question, and not asking a question.
