asked the President of the Local Government Board if he can state the amount of loans sanctioned by his Department during the period 26th March to 31st August, 1915, during the same period in 1914, and each of the financial years ended 31st March, 1913 and 1914?

The amount of loans sanctioned by the Board during the period 26th March to 31st August, 1915, was £2,091,402, and during the same period in 1914 was £7,412,277. During the financial years ended the 31st March, 1913 and 1914, the loans sanctioned were £12,795,285 and £15,178,255 respectively. I should like to add that of the £2,091,402, over £1,350,000 was for war requirements, such as the provision of electrical and gas power, housing for munition workers, hospitals, etc.
