HC Deb 21 September 1915 vol 74 c328
49. Mr. FARRELL

asked the Secretary to the Treasury on whose advice he directed the Irish Insurance Commissioners to set aside the present certification arrangements for insured persons requiring benefit in Ireland; whether he is aware that, by the proposal, at least 200 doctors who stood by the National Insurance Act are threatened with loss of office and the salary agreed on; and whether, in these circumstances, he proposes to proceed with the new arrangements in violation of obligations incurred under difficulty by these doctors?

Mr. C. ROBERTS

The part-time appointments referred to by the hon. Member were made on purely a temporary basis pending the settlement of a permanent scheme for certification, and were terminable by one month's notice on either side, and this fact was clearly indicated by the Irish Insurance Commissioners to all candidates for such appointments.

Mr. FARRELL

Are we to understand that this matter is now definitely settled?

Mr. ROBERTS

No; it is still subject of negotiation. I hope to receive very shortly a deputation from the persons on whose behalf the hon. Member is asking the question.

Mr. FARRELL

Has the hon. Gentleman included in the deputation representatives of the societies?

Mr. ROBERTS

I am not quite sure.
