HC Deb 20 October 1915 vol 74 cc1766-7
2. Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that Royal Naval Reserve warrant engineers, called up from the merchant service at the commencement of the War, are only receiving 8s. 6d. a day, whereas regular Royal Navy artificer engineers get 1s. a day extra for every five years' service and at the end of ten years 10s. 6d. a day; and whether he can see his way to equalise matters by raising the Royal Naval Reserve warrant engineers to 10s. 6d. a day, especially in view of the fact that men who declined to join as warrant engineers, Royal Naval Reserve, before the War are now holding temporary commissions as lieutenant-engineers with the corresponding pay of 14s. a day?

The SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, but I may observe that warrant engineers, Royal Naval Reserve, with the necessary qualifications receive at all times an annual retainer of £15 a year. It is not proposed to make any change in the regulations in regard to the pay of these officers.
