HC Deb 12 October 1915 vol 74 cc1182-3
26. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he proposes to take any action upon the complaints of individual traders that co-operative societies receive perferential treatment from the Government in that their profits are not assessed to income and will presumably not be assessed to War Tax?

Mr. McKENNA

I would refer the hon. Member to the answers which I gave on this subject on the 30th September last.

Sir FRANCIS LOWE

Are not members of these societies registered by numbers instead of by their names, and does not the right hon. Gentleman think it would facilitate the ascertaining of the actual receipts they derive from these societies if some system of registration were introduced requiring that they should be registered in the same way as members of joint stock companies, by their names and not by numbers?

Mr. McKENNA

I will consider that point, which does not arise out of this particular question.
