HC Deb 04 March 1915 vol 70 c982
55. Mr. OUTHWAITE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether he can state the acreage devoted in the United Kingdom to the production of material for the manufacture of beer and spirits, respectively?

Sir H. VERNEY

The acreage of barley in the United Kingdom in 1914 was 1,873,280 acres, that of hops was 36,661 acres. No figures are available as to the proportion of home-grown grain used for brewing or distilling; but a largo proportion of the barley crop is used for feeding stock.
