HC Deb 28 June 1915 vol 72 cc1461-2
40. Mr. STEWART

asked whether, owing to certain recent events which have happened in the colony of Singapore, a system of national service for all British subjects has been inaugurated; and whether the system is to be applied to any other Crown colonies?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I presume that my hon. Friend is referring to reports that have appeared in the Press. I have not yet heard anything from the Governor on the subject.

Mr. STEWART

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether this could be done by the local legislative authority only?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I have no information on the subject, as I say, but I do not think that any legislation of the kind has been carried out.
