HC Deb 28 June 1915 vol 72 cc1459-60
28 and 29. Mr. NEVILLE

asked the Home Secretary (1) whether he will put the Public Prosecutor in motion to take action against persons advertising chemical fire extinguishers and other appliances who decry in their advertisements the value of sand or water for use in the case of air-raid fires, and who thereby induce the public to disregard the advice given by the Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to the sole advantage of the enemy; and (2) whether, having regard to the police advice that water and sand be kept for possible air-raid fires, and that the public should only buy chemical fire extinguishers guaranteed to be made to the specification of either the Board of Trade, His Majesty's Office of Works, the Metropolitan Police, or the Fire Prevention Committee, he will take steps to warn the public against those makers, naming them by name, who advertise the sale of powder extinguishers and other similar appliances which do not comply with the specifications of any of the above-mentioned bodies?

Sir J. SIMON

I have no doubt the public will pay heed to the warnings of the Commissioner of Police as to keeping sand or water in readiness and not purchasing portable fire extinguishers without a proper guarantee. The advertisements referred to are being carefully watched, and further action will be taken in the case of particular makers if this appears necessary in the public interest.
