HC Deb 23 June 1915 vol 72 cc1153-4
7. Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that some 1,000 tins per day are being sent to Germany; whether the tin contained therein is used for bomb and rifle making; and whether he will take steps to stop such export?

Mr. TENNANT

I am aware that a considerable number of tins are being sent to Germany daily addressed to prisoners of war. I understand that 90,000 tins of a dimension of 9 inches each way would be required to produce 1 ton of tin. The matter has been carefully considered, but at present adequate grounds do not appear to exist for stopping the use of tins for sending comforts to the prisoners of war.
