HC Deb 15 June 1915 vol 72 cc530-1
22. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the censoring authority recognise republication in Germany as evidence that the matter so republished is helpful to Germany and hurtful to this country; and whether the discriminating administration is to continue whereby, under the same Act, the "Times" newspaper is allowed to publish with impunity matter held by the Government to contravene the Act, and subsequently republished in Germany, while suppressing by military force, without trial, Irish newspapers for publishing less objectionable matter and for copying matter from English newspapers?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir John Simon)

The answer to the first part of the hon. Member's question depends on the circumstances; as regards the second part of the question, the authorities in this country do their utmost to exercise their discretion fairly and impartially, and I have no doubt the same is true in Ireland.

Mr. GINNELL

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman able to explain his inconsistency set forth in the question?

Sir J. SIMON

I do not admit any inconsistency.
