HC Deb 07 June 1915 vol 72 c71
28. Mr. HOUSTON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he can state the average number of miles per day traversed by Chief or Divisional Royal Engineers while on duty at the front; whether these Chief Royal Engineers are supplied with motor vehicles to enable them to efficiently perform their onerous duties; and, if not, whether they will be forthwith supplied with a more expeditious means of locomotion than horses?

Mr. TENNANT

No, Sir, I fear I am unable to state the average number of miles traversed by the officers mentioned. The Chief Engineers of Armies, Army Corps, or Divisions are at liberty to make use of the cars at the disposal of the General Officer commanding those formations whenever the distances they have to travel are too great for a horse to cover within the requisite time.

Mr. HOUSTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that our Engineers at present are not supplied with cars, and that the German Engineers are?

Mr. TENNANT

I have just informed the hon. Member that the Chief Engineers of Armies, Army Corps, or Divisions have cars at their disposal.
