HC Deb 16 February 1915 vol 69 c1002
21. Mr. ELLIS DAVIES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that in the case of Private No. 1678, 1st London Divisional Train, Territorial Force, Army Service Corps, who joined in November, 1914, although he stated he was a Nonconformist his disc described him as a member of the Church of England; that, notwithstanding his description, he received at Crowborough another disc with the same inaccurate description; and that on his again objecting the officers advised him to alter it himself; and whether he will, particularly in view of the use made of statistics as to the religious creeds of; the soldiers, give such instructions that in future Nonconformists shall no longer be, described as members of the Church of England against their wishes?

The UNDER-SECRETARY Of STATE for WAR (Mr. Tennant)

The man to whom my hon. Friend refers cannot be traced, but if my hon. Friend will supply me with the name further inquiry will be made. I may add that if the man was not allowed to register his religion correctly this is contrary to the instructions issued.
