HC Deb 16 February 1915 vol 69 cc1003-4
24. Mr. PETO

asked how many passenger and other merchant steamships are now used for the internment of aliens in this country; and whether, in view of the scarcity of steam tonnage, these vessels will be liberated for cargo-carrying and other accommodation found for the aliens on shore?

Mr. TENNANT

Nine vessels are employed, and I understand that two will be liberated at the end of this month.

Mr. PETO

When will the rest of them be liberated?

Mr. TENNANT

I am afraid I cannot give a date. We are very anxious to liberate them as soon as posible.

Mr. PETO

Will the vessels liberated include some of those which are located near Portsmouth?

Mr. TENNANT

I think that is so, but I would not be certain.
