HC Deb 11 February 1915 vol 69 cc731-2
15. Mr. KING

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has given attention to the last published Report of the Representative Body of the Disestablished Church of Ireland, which shows that, from the Irish Church Commutation Fund, 1871 to 1913, no less than £1,628,000 has been transferred to various Church funds after paying all clergy claims, and that a total profit of £1,880,489 16s. 8d. has been made upon the Commutation Fund; and whether, with a view to enabling the clergy and laity of the Church in Wales to appreciate the commutation facilities in the Welsh Church Act, he will issue a memorandum embodying these facts relating to the Irish Church?

Mr. McKENNA

I have given attention to the Report referred to by my hon. Friend, but I regret that I do not see my way to issue a memorandum of the character suggested.

Mr. PETO

Is it not the case that under the Irish Church Act an entirely different loan was arranged from that which is the case in reference to the Church in Wales?

Mr. KING

Are not the terms more favourable to the Church in Wales, inasmuch as the basis is 3½ instead of 4 per cent.?

Mr. McKENNA

Generally the terms in the Welsh case are much more favourable.
