HC Deb 10 February 1915 vol 69 cc561-2
45. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether he has taken note that a Durham county magistrate has been rebuked by the Home Office for irrelevant and intemperate observations from the bench; whether he is aware that these observations consisted of repeated and categorical statements that the safety of the Realm was neglected by Ministers; and what steps he intends to take to prevent persons in authority, such as county magistrates, exciting alarm and distrust?

Mr. McKENNA

The Prime Minister has asked me to reply. The answer to the first question is in the affirmative. As regards the second, the statements were made only on one occasion. I think county magistrates generally have done their utmost to allay unnecessary alarm and to support the measures taken for national safety, and that there is no occasion for taking any such steps as my hon. Friend suggests.

Mr. KING

As this gentleman is such an exception to the rule, will his action be brought to the notice of the Lord Chancellor, and if not, why not?

Mr. McKENNA

I think sufficient has been done.
