HC Deb 10 February 1915 vol 69 cc558-9
35. Mr. GEORGE ROBERTS

asked the President of the Board of Education if his attention has been directed to the formation of classes in certain Army training camps for the teaching of French and other modern languages; and whether he contemplates any measure for organising and regularising such classes, together with their adjustment to military routine, so that soldiers willing to learn shall be provided with facilities for so doing?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Pease)

I have done my best to encourage local education authorities to provide educational facilities in co-operation with the military authorities for soldiers in training camps who are willing to take advantage of them. The organisation of classes so as to fit in with military duties, which are frequently varied, is a matter which can only be dealt with on the spot in consultation with commanding officers.
