§ 65. Mr. MOUNTasked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he is aware that Territorial soldiers on detachment receive 2s. 6d. a day for lodging and food, i.e., 9d. for billeting and 1s. 9d. for food, and that soldiers of the New Army, commonly called Kitchener's Army, receive 3s. 4½d. under the same circumstances; if he is aware that the schedule of the higher rates is printed on the back of all billeting forms which have to be used by the Territorial Forces; and will he explain the reason for two different rates of payment under exactly similar circumstances?
Mr. BAKERNo distinction is drawn between Territorial and New Army troops as is suggested. Lodging allowance at 139 9d. and ration allowance at 1s. 9d. are given to any soldier on detached duty, if he is not billeted. The rate of 3s. 4½d. is that allowed not to soldiers but to private householders when troops are compulsorily billeted on them.
