HC Deb 04 February 1915 vol 69 c132
55. Mr. FALLE

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will permit civil servants generally, and especially Foreign Office, Treasury, and Land Valuation clerks, to enlist or receive commissions in the Army; and, if so, seeing that the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee is calling on employers of labour to get their employés together and induce them to enlist, will he explain why the ordinary employer is asked to do what the Government is not prepared to do?

The PRIME MINISTER

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave on this subject on 23rd November last to the hon. Member for Sunderland. Many civil servants have either enlisted or received commissions, but it is impossible to release every civil servant who wishes to join the Colours without seriously impairing the efficiency of the State.
