HC Deb 23 December 1915 vol 77 c592
14. Mr. HUGH EDWARDS

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the fact that hotel guests at English hotels frequently describe themselves as of English nationality in the hotel registration forms, it is permissible for Welshmen who have taken rooms in hotels in Wales to describe themselves as of Welsh nationality?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir John Simon)

The proper expression is "British Nationality"; but I do not suppose that any penalty is likely to attach to the use of any narrower term covered by the more general expression.

Mr. EDWARDS

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman, while agreeing with him that the proper expression is "British," and whether the chief constable of Cardiganshire was under a misapprehension when he informed the Cardiganshire Police Committee that he had received in structions from the Home Office—

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member must give notice of that.
