HC Deb 22 April 1915 vol 71 c393
33. Sir JOHN SPEAR

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture, if he will state the number of mares placed on farms under the Government scheme for the encouragement of horse breeding up to Lady Day last?

Sir H. VERNEY

There, have been 741 mares leased to custodians since 1911. The number of mares leased at present is 557.

34. Sir J. SPEAR

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture if, having regard to the scarcity of horses for farm work, he will further pomote the sale of ex-Army horses in the agricultural districts?

Sir H. VERNEY

A number of mares unfit for further military service have been selected in France by an inspector of the Board and sold in this country with a view to their being used for breeding. I doubt whether it would be possible to arrange for the return of horses suitable for farm work, but I shall be glad to convey the hon. Member's suggestion to the War Office.
