HC Deb 21 April 1915 vol 71 cc263-4
25. Mr. HINDS

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether he will state what sums of money have been placed at the disposal of the Welsh colleges during the years 1913–14 and 1914–15 for the purposes of agricultural education and research; and whether he will state the total sums specifically devoted by the Board of Agriculture to Wales, including Monmouthshire, year by year from 1900–1 to 1914–15?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Harry Verney)

The sums granted by the Board to the Welsh colleges for agricultural education and research during the years 1913–14 and 1914–15 were £4,616 and £5,120 respectively, and to the whole of Wales (including Monmouthshire) £7,401 and £9,220 respectively. Before the year 1913–14 no Grants for agricultural education and research were made by the Board to counties, as such Grants were payable by the Board of Education, but the sums paid by the Board to the Welsh colleges before that date varied from £1,800 in 1900–1 to £2,966 in 1912–13.

Mr. HOGGE

Can my hon. Friend say whether they propose to deprive Wales of any money for agriculture in the new Estimates as they have done in regard to Scotland?

Sir H. VERNEY

I would like notice of that question.
