HC Deb 15 September 1914 vol 66 cc849-50
2. Mr. CHARLES BATHURST

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider the desirability of issuing negotiable wheat warrants or certificates upon which advances of money can be made on easy terms to those farmers who, in the national interest, are prepared to keep their wheat off the market until the spring or summer of next year, but whose financial resources do not admit of their locking up a substantial part of their capital for several months?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Harry Verney)

The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to answer this question. The matter referred to has been very carefully considered, and the Government are clearly of opinion that farmers will best serve the national interest by dealing with their wheat crop this year exactly as they would in normal circumstances. No occasion therefore arises for any action of the kind suggested by the hon. Member.
