HC Deb 15 September 1914 vol 66 c865
16. Mr. NEEDHAM

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will endeavour to arrange with the cable companies for a substantial reduction in their charges during the enforced use of plain language for business cable messages?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Hobhouse)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given yesterday to a question asked by the hon. Member for North Islington on the subject of cable rates.

Sir J. D. REES

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman has he inquired into my allegation that the expenses of the company have trebled, and that that is a serious charge upon them?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

It is a serious charge that had better be put in writing.

17. Mr. NEEDHAM

asked the Postmaster-General if he will arrange to allow at the present time the use of those code cable addresses which were registered prior to the War, even though code messages are not at present allowable?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I understand that this matter is under the consideration of the military authorities, who are responsible for the cable censorship.
