HC Deb 19 November 1914 vol 68 cc559-60
16. Mr. WILES

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware of the amount of discontent which exists among the temporary workers in the Post Office as to their remuneration, and if he can now make some improvement in their pay, having regard to the number of married men with families to support who have been compelled to seek these positions owing to their ordinary work being completely stopped by the War; and will he give instructions that overtime in the General Post Office shall be arranged for with greater fairness throughout the whole staff, whether permanent or temporary?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The rates of pay of persons temporarily employed by the Post Office are at present under consideration; I have received a Deputation on the subject. It is the general practice to distribute overtime as equitably as circumstances permit, but, if the hon. Member has any particular case in mind, I shall be glad to look into it.

Mr. WILES

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether he will be able to report-to the House before the Adjournment as to the wages of temporary workers?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

Well, I do not know, but I will see what I can do.

Mr. HOGGE

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that the question is expedited before the extra Christmas pressure?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I cannot give any definite pledge.
