HC Deb 12 May 1914 vol 62 cc898-9
6. Mr. JOHN WARD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has received any complaints from representatives of British trading interests as to the difficulty of obtaining accurate information or advice from the British re presentatives at Tangiers; whether the Mr. White who has large interests in French and Spanish commercial companies operating in Morocco is the same person who acts as the British Agent at Tangiers; and, if so, what action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter?

Mr. ACLAND

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The only thing approaching a complaint was that information about an Arbitral Commission on Mining Claims had not been sent to a particular individual. In this case the information was sent to the Foreign Office and forwarded to the Board of Trade to be made public in the usual way, which is the most fair, practicable and effective course. His Majesty's Government have complete confidence in His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Tangiers, who holds a distinguished record in His Majesty's service and is in every way eminently qualified for the responsible post he holds. I am not aware that Mr. White has any interests in French and Spanish commercial companies operating in Morocco, and I do not propose to take any action in the matter.
