HC Deb 12 May 1914 vol 62 cc908-9
45. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether, when recommending persons to be appointed as bishops, he has regard to the Resolution unanimously adopted by this House on 11th April, 1899; and whether for the future such persons will be required, before appointment, to give an assurance that they will, in so far as in them lies, enforce the law as declared by the Courts which have jurisdiction in matters ecclesiastical?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE (for the Prime Minister)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the latter part, the responsibility rests with the advisers of the Crown to select such persons as will act in conformity with the law, and my right hon. Friend does not think it would be appropriate to require any such pledge as is suggested.

Mr. KING

Can we know the exact form in which this assurance is given, so that we may judge for ourselves whether adequate means are taken to enforce the Resolution adopted by the House?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I am not sure of the Resolution my hon. Friend refers to.

Mr. KING

I will bring it to the notice of the Prime Minister.
