HC Deb 11 May 1914 vol 62 cc700-1
91. Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the Leeds Corporation spent £22,000 for extra police assistance during the strike of corporation workers in the financial year 1913–14; and whether the statement made in the Budget speech means that half the cost of extra police engaged by municipalities during labour disputes will be paid from the, national Exchequer?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. McKenna)

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. The conditions on which any Exchequer Grant in aid of the police will be made have not yet been settled, but I would point out that if the hon. Member refers to police borrowed by Leeds from other forces, Leeds paid the police authorities from whom they were borrowed for their services, and such a transaction would not involve an increase in the amount which would be paid from the Exchequer towards the pay of the police.
