HC Deb 11 May 1914 vol 62 cc703-4
102. Sir A. GRIFFITH-BOSCAWEN

asked whether the new Education Grant for necessitous areas will be paid to all necessitous areas or only to those which were necessitous at the time when the original Grant was made; whether legislation will be necessary to enable the Grant to be paid; and at what date it is proposed that the first instalment will be paid?

Mr. J. A. PEASE

In answer to the first part, I may refer the hon. Member to the answer I have already given to the hon. Member for Denbigh Boroughs. No legislation will be necessary. I cannot say at what date the money will be paid, but I should hope to be able to pay some instalment in advance.

Lord ALEXANDER THYNNE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what proportion of the £515,000 is allocated to the provision of meals and what proportion to necessitous areas?

Mr. J. A. PEASE

Probably about £92,000 to the provision of meals and £423,000 to necessitous areas.

Lord A. THYNNE

What proportion does £92,000 bear to the cost of feeding borne by the local authorities?

Mr. J. A. PEASE

According to the last estimate available, it is approximately one-half, and it is anticipated that it will be approximately one-half for the current year.
