HC Deb 11 May 1914 vol 62 c726
78. Mr. CROOKS

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the firm of Strachan and Company, Stroud, are contractors to the Admiralty; if so, whether he is aware that the wages paid to the workpeople employed are less than those paid by other firms in the district; and whether he will have inquiry made with a view to securing compliance with the Fair-Wages Clause?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

Messrs. Strachan and Co. are on the Admiralty List, but have no contract in hand at present. They have repeatedly held Admiralty contracts in past years, and no allegation has been previously made as to their failure to comply with the Fair-Wages Clause. If my hon. Friend will furnish any information in his possession bearing upon the point it will be of assistance to the Admiralty in deciding what steps it may be desirable to take in the matter.
