HC Deb 07 May 1914 vol 62 cc443-4
54. Mr. PATRICK O'BRIEN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, having regard to the public inconvenience caused by the provisions relating to Income Tax and to Death Duties, respectively, being scattered through a number of Statutes, and the likelihood of any steps to remove such inconvenience commanding approval in all quarters of the House, he will during the present Session introduce measures consolidating the statutory provisions regulating the said two matters, subject in the case of Death Duties to the preservation, as regards past deaths, of different dates of death as the commencement dates of different provisions?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

In view of the heavy demands upon Parliamentary time during the present Session, I can hold out no hope of introducing measures to consolidate the laws regulating Income Tax and Death Duties.

Viscount HELMSLEY

Would not the right hon. Gentleman do what is asked if it was understood that this Bill would meet with the general approval of the House?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

That would put the matter in a totally different position.

Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

Does the right hon. Gentleman propose to have it done in an Autumn Session?
