HC Deb 06 May 1914 vol 62 cc275-6
63. Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

asked whether the expression all churches in Clause 8 (1) (a) (i) of the Established Church (Wales) Bill includes the precincts of all churches, parochial as well as cathedral?

Mr. McKENNA

The answer is in the negative. The expression "church" includes the precincts in the ease of the cathedral churches only.

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

What is to happen to all those monastic ruins and the various buildings round about parish churches in Wales, and to what authority will they be transferred? I could give instances of a number.

Mr. McKENNA

The hon. Member had better give me the particular instance which he has in mind.

64. Mr ORMSBY-GORE

asked what authority under the Established Church (Wales) Bill will decide whether the grounds and monuments surrounding St. Asaph Cathedral are precincts or a burial ground transferable to a secular authority under Sub-section (b), Sub-clause (1), Clause 8 of the Bill?

Mr. McKENNA

The question whether the grounds and monuments surrounding St. Asaph Cathedral are in fact part of the precincts of the cathedral, or a burial ground transferable to a secular authority under Clause 8 of the Bill will be decided by the Welsh Commissioners.

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Would there be any appeal from the Welsh Commissioners to a Court of Law on this all-important matter?

Mr. McKENNA

As I read the Appeal Clause there will be no appeal.
