HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 c28
70. Mr. J. WARD

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been drawn to the public defaulters' drill on the barrack square at Wellington Bar racks; whether this form of punishment is still general in the Army; and whether, in the interests of recruiting for the Service, this form of punishment will be reconsidered?

Mr. TENNANT

I am aware that defaulters' drill is carried out on the barrack square at Wellington Barracks. This is because no other place is available. It is, however, the general rule that this drill is to be carried out, where possible, in such a manner as not to attract public-attention.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Would not the court at the back be suitable for this purpose?

Mr. TENNANT

No, Sir, there is no room.
