HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 cc14-5
11. Mr. NEWMAN

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has received any complaints of letters being received by their owners after having been opened while in transit by an expert process, and the contents read and subsequently replaced; whether he is aware that the majority of such letters are those addressed to officers who are serving in either the Army or Navy, or letters that happen to be written to private individuals on Admiralty or War Office notepaper; and will he cause inquiry to be made with a view to safeguarding the private correspondence of the classes alluded to?

Captain NORTON

I have no knowledge of any such complaints. If the hon. Member will furnish particulars of the cases referred to, I will have inquiry made and acquaint him with the result.

Mr. NEWMAN

May I send the hon. Member a letter which has been opened in the way I have described?

Captain NORTON

If you please.
