HC Deb 30 March 1914 vol 60 cc799-800
4. Mr. NEWMAN

asked if the right hon. Gentleman has any information relative to the attack on the city of Torreon by a force of the Constitutionalist party; and what measures are being taken for the protection of British lives and interests in that part of Mexico?

Mr. ACLAND

I have no information with regard to an engagement at Torreon beyond what is stated in the Press. As regards the protection of British lives and interests I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Bury St. Edmunds on 26th February, to which I have only to add that, according to a recent report from the British Vice-Consul at Gomez Palacio, which is only a few miles from Torreon, the general in command of the Federal forces has stated that he will use every effort to protect foreigners in Torreon, and that President Huerta has recently issued a fresh and urgent instruction to all commanders in the field for this purpose.
