HC Deb 30 March 1914 vol 60 c820
73. Major WHITE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty who is directly responsible on board ship for the upkeep and efficiency of the guns and the drilling of the guns' crews on armed merchantmen; what are the additional emoluments of those to whom this extra responsibility is entrusted; and whether the gun-layers and guns' crews are paid extra for their services whilst those in charge of the guns receive nothing?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. Churchill)

The responsibility mentioned in the first part of the question rests with the officer detailed by the company for the purpose. No extra emoluments will be paid to him, but service in charge of the guns will be allowed to count towards qualification for his training fee in place of annual or biennial naval training. The gun layers and guns' crews will receive extra pay for their services.
