HC Deb 02 July 1914 vol 64 cc526-7
11. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that Mrs. Julia Peppard, thrice held by the Coole subcommittee to be entitled by age and circumstances to an old age pension, is still denied one owing to the accidental absence of her name from registers and Census Returns for which she is in no way responsible; and, seeing that age is an absolute title under the Statute, and that an inspector will not reverse his own decision, whether he will have this case investigated and the evidence heard upon oath by another inspector or by the County Court judge, without expense to the applicant?

Mr. BIRRELL

I would refer the hon. Member to the replies given to his previous questions on this subject. A recent claim made by Mrs. Peppard is at present under consideration by the Local Government Board. The Board have no power under the Old Age Pension Act to comply with the suggestion that the case should be referred to the County Court judge.
