HC Deb 02 July 1914 vol 64 c544
46. Mr. JAMES HOGGE

asked the First Lord of the Treasury whether he is now prepared to sanction a Treasury Grant to complete the publication of the results of the Bruce expedition, in view of the fact that Sir E. Shackleton's expedition has been made possible by a gift from Scotland of three times the amount required for the completion of the Bruce publications?

The PRIME MINISTER

I fear I cannot add anything to the reply which I gave the hon. Member on this subject on 23rd March last. The matters to which reference is made in the question do not appear to me to alter the situation as then explained.

Mr. HOGGE

Is my right hon. Friend not aware that it is discouraging outside contributions for scientific expeditions if the Government does not do the same for a Scottish expedition as for an English expedition? And is it not true that for this Shackleton expedition, for which £24,000 in one sum has come from Scotland, the Government has given £10,000, and refuses £5,000 to complete the Bruce publications?

The PRIME MINISTER

I went into this matter on the 21st March. I do not see that the fact that a Scottish benefactor gave a large contribution to the Shackleton expedition in any way alters the situation.
