HC Deb 24 February 1914 vol 58 c1571
21. Mr. LOUGH

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether Captain Gonne was arrested and lodged in Lewes gaol on the 13th December, 1913, at the suit of the Inland Revenue Department, and released on Monday the 15th December; and whether any mistake had been made in issuing the warrant for this arrest or, if not, whether the release was ordered because the tax claimed had been paid; and, if so, by whom?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Montagu)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. Captain Gonne was arrested in due course of law, and his release was ordered because the amount due from him had been paid. The person by whom the payment was made has not disclosed his identity.

Mr. LOUGH

Can my hon. Friend tell me the name of the person who paid the tax?

Mr. MONTAGU

I cannot; because I do not know.
