HC Deb 19 February 1914 vol 58 cc1268-73
Lord ROBERT CECIL

I have an Amendment on the Paper, but I am afraid that at this hour it will not be possible to have a discussion upon it. I do desire, in the very few moments left to me, to press upon the House the great importance of the subject referred to in the Amendment of which I have given notice. I hope we may be able to adjourn the discussion to a future day, when it can be more properly carried on. The Amendment on the Paper is in these words: "But humbly regrets that His Majesty's Government do not propose to take any steps for preventing the growing debasement of the accustomed standard of purity in public life." The importance of that question is one which I am quite certain every Member of this House will recognise. Everyone recognise the importance of purity in public life. Nothing is more discreditable, if I may say so, to the Labour party than the fact that during the whole of their existence they have not, so far as I can recollect, taken a single action in order to promote purity in public life. The only action I can recollect that they have taken in the matter was when the hon. Member for Halifax (Mr. Parker) supported in all its atrocity the proceedings of the majority

of the Marconi Committee, and justified himself in doing so by stating in the country that he had received a private communication from the Government informing him, apparently quite incorrectly, of the action Ministers proposed to take in connection with that Committee's Report.

Mr. RAMSAY MACDONALD

The hon. Member never said anything of the kind.

The PRIME MINISTER

rose in his place and claimed to move, "That the Question be now put."

Question put, "That the Question, be now put."

The House divided: Ayes, 285; Noes, 168.
