HC Deb 19 February 1914 vol 58 cc1136-7
Mr. FIELD

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman the Vice-President of the Board of Agriculture in Ireland whether any fresh cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Ireland have been reported?

Mr. T. W. RUSSELL (Vice-President of the Board of Agriculture, Ireland)

None, Sir.

Mr. KILBRIDE

In view of the fact that there has been no fresh outbreak of cattle disease for a considerable time in Ireland, may I ask whether the right hon. Gentleman will make representation to the President of the Agricultural Board here in favour of allowing Irish cattle to enter other ports on this side than Birkenhead?

Mr. RUSSELL

Yes, I am very glad to consult my right hon. Friend on the subject. But I wish to point out to my hon. Friend that the present moment is one of extreme difficulty.

Mr. STANIER

May I ask where at present does the disinfection of these ships landing cattle take place?

Mr. RUSSELL

Each ship is disinfected when and where it has delivered the cattle.

Mr. JOHN O'CONNOR

Are any steps taken for the disinfection of the drovers who return from Birkenhead?

Mr. RUSSELL

Yes, in every port.

Mr. O'CONNOR

What are they—what steps?

Mr. RUSSELL

The usual steps are taken.
