HC Deb 17 February 1914 vol 58 cc755-6
31. Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state how many separate cases there have been up to the end of 1913 where part of the amount payable as Death Duties has been paid in land under Section 56 of the Finance Act of 1909; how many acres of land have been so acquired by the State; and how many of these acres still remain in the ownership of the State?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Lloyd George)

So far, the only offer of land which has been accepted is that to which I referred in my reply of the 16th July, 1913, to the hon. Member for the Blackfriars Division of Glasgow.

Mr. SNOWDEN

Have there been many offers to the Treasury?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

Yes, I think there has been quite a good number, but hot of very suitable land.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Was the land offered at the Government valuation?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I really could not say, but the Noble Lord might give me notice.

Mr. MITCHELL-THOMSON

May I inquire whether any land so acquired appears under any special heading to the National Accounts?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

That I could not say without notice.
