Member for St. George's-in-the-East, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, if he will state to what use he proposes to put the site of the present Calton Gaol; and whether he has secured the necessary sanction of the Lord Provost, magistrates, and council of Edinburgh for such use of the site?
§ Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN (Lord of the Treasury)The site of the Calton Gaol has not yet been acquired by the Commissioners of Works. If so acquired, the present intention is to use it for the erection of offices for Public Departments. The First Commissioner is advised that the sanction of the Town Council of Edinburgh to any building scheme on the site is not necessary.

§ Mr. BENNThe site in question is at present in the occupation of the Prison 559 Commission, for whom the Office of Works have no responsibility. After the site has been transferred to the Office of Works, then they will accept responsibility for it.
