HC Deb 04 August 1914 vol 65 cc1904-5
49. Mr. FRANCIS MEEHAN

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that George Flynn, of Drumshambo, county Leitrim, enlisted in the Royal Engineers, in Edinburgh, in May last under a false age and description, and is now stationed at Chatham; and whether, having regard to his false declaration and that he is a delicate boy and the only support of an old infirm mother, he will be now discharged?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Tennant)

It appears that this recruit understated his age on enlistment, but this does not under the regulations constitute a false declaration necessitating discharge. As regards the other aspects of the matter the recruit is of good physique, and, although his mother has described her son as her only support, she has never asked for his discharge on compassionate grounds.
