§ 8. Sir J. D. REESasked the Under Secretary for India whether he can give the House any information regarding the abdication of His Highness the Raja of Cochin?
Mr. ROBERTSIn September of last year the Raja of Cochin expressed the desire, after eighteen years of arduous and continuous work, of retiring from active participation in worldly affairs and devoting himself to a religious life. His Highness' abdication was accordingly sanctioned by the Government of India, and adequate arrangements have been made by the State for the maintenance of himself and his family. His successor is the first cousin (once removed) of His Highness, and was born in 1858.
