HC Deb 30 April 1914 vol 61 c1853
39. Sir RANDOLF BAKER

asked the Postmaster-General what is the reason for the delay in erecting the post office at Gillingham, Dorset, which has been promised for over two years and for which the site was purchased nearly a year ago?

The ASSISTANT POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Captain Norton)

Owing to financial exigencies it was not possible to assign to this service in the Office of Works' Estimates for 1914–15 more than about half the total cost of the building. It has, therefore, not been thought expedient to arrange for the commencement of the work until late in the year, because, if it were begun now, it would have to be broken off in the middle for want of funds. But I will sec if it is possible to do anything in the way of expediting matters.
